LEWISTON — Lewiston girls’ soccer coach Butch Dow will be the first to say his team has struggled in executing corner kicks.

That wasn’t the case Saturday night. The Blue Devils converted two of their three corners into goals in earning a 3-0 shutout win over the Edward Little Red Eddies.

The Blue Devils (4-6) took an early 1-0 lead with 26:30 left in the first half when Mariah Carrier sent a high, booming ball from the midfield area toward the Red Eddies goal. As freshman keeper Molly Murray (six saves) rushed out to play the shot, the ball took a high bounce over her head and into the net.

“I was just trying to clear it up the field,” Carrier said. “It just happened. It definitely gave us a spark. The second we get a goal, we go that much harder.”

The bad bounce was something the Red Eddies (2-7-2) are accustomed to this fall.

“That’s been happening all season long,” EL coach Craig Latuscha said. “Just the unlucky bounce. Unfortunately, it bounded over her head. That deflated us a bit.”

With momentum on their side, the Blue Devils pushed the attack for the remainder of the half. When they were awarded a corner with just over five minutes before the break, they executed corner kick No. 1.

Carrier’s left-footed boot sent the ball across the EL crease area in front of Murray. As the ball trickled its way to the far post, Maegan Mathon fought her way through a crowd of players to tap the ball into the net.

“That’s the side I usually take the shot from so they curve,” said Carrier. “We’ve had trouble finishing them this season.”

The Red Eddies began pressing the attack in the second half, controlling the ball and getting most of the shots in the first 11 minutes after the intermission.

Jaclyn Masters had an early opportunity, but her left-footed boot from 18 yards out was caught by Blue Devil keeper Kenzi Masselli (14 saves). An Allarie Lever set up to Masters moments later was foiled by Masselli as well.

“We knew that was going to happen,” said Dow of the second half barrage by the Red Eddies. “It’s called weathering the storm and we did it well.”

With the visitors getting most of the offensive opportunities, it was the Blue Devils who would get the next goal. This time it was Carrier setting up Emily Dixon off a corner kick with 18:01 left in the match to beat reserve keeper Taylor Landry (seven saves) and seal the victory.

“That’s been one of our weaknesses,” Dow said. “We’re finally starting to get it. It was good to see Emily finish.”
