LISBON FALLS — The Lisbon Historical Society greeted descendants of Oliver Moses recently. Attending were Oliver Moses V of Houston, Texas, Michael Moses of Sugarland, Texas, Richard Moses of Roswell, Ga., and David Wade of Portland.
Oliver Moses (1803-1882), one of the founders of the Worumbo Mill, served as president of the mill from its beginning in 1864 until his death in 1882. The Moses Family had continued ties with the mill. Oliver Moses III, who also served as president, sold the mill in 1956 to J.P. Stevens and Co.
Richard Moses, great-great-grandson of Oliver Moses, has donated historical material on the Worumbo Mill to the Lisbon Historical Society. On this visit, donations included a report on a “Special Meeting of the Stockholders” held in December 1941 and the official score book for the 1938 Worumbo Mill Indians baseball season.
Richard Moses worked summer’s at the mill as a cloth finisher. He was a pitcher for the Worumbo Indians from 1945-1947 and played three years in the Minor League for the Boston Braves, returning to the mill during the winter.
After two years in the military, Richard worked full time at the mill from 1952 until 1956 when it was sold. During his stay, he completed the training program, which included learning to operate all of the machinery. In 1956, Richard transferred to the J. P. Stevens Mill in Massachusetts, where he stayed until it closed in 1963.
