KITTERY — First Traip knocked out Dirigo star running back Bryan Blackman, then it knocked out Dirigo.
Corey Aldecoa rushed for two touchdowns and the second-seeded Rangers clamped down on run defense to shut out No. 7 Dirigo, 34-0, in the Western Class C quarterfinals Saturday.
Traip (7-2) will host No. 3 Maranacook in the semifinals next Saturday. Dirigo closes its season at 4-5.
Blackman, the Cougars’ speedy senior running back, was injured two carries into the game when he hit his head on the ground after a clean hit from a Traip defender. Aldecoa put the Rangers on the board in the first quarter with a 34-yard run, followed by Tyler Nay’s two-point conversion which made it 8-0.
While the defense was limiting Dirigo to 54 total yards in the first half, Traip took a 14-0 lead into halftime after Nay’s 25-yard touchdown run.
Daron Draker’s 12-yard touchdown run and Cam Cavanaugh’s two-point conversion catch opened the lead to 22-0 in the third quarter. Aldecoa added his second touchdown on a 12-yard run in the fourth quarter and Andre Bradly capped the scoring with a one-yard plunge.
Traip limited Dirigo to 67 yards rushing, highlighted by quarterback Ben Holmes’ 28-yard scramble. Holmes finished 10-for-26 for 74 yards passing for the Cougars, who were plagued by penalties throughout.
