PARIS — A Lewiston man charged with breaking into the Hebron town office on Saturday night was released on personal recognizance.

Daniel Ouellette, 48, is accused of breaking into the town office, although nothing was reported stolen. His case will go before a Grand Jury to see if he will be indicted on the charges of burglary, criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools and violating bail.

According to a report on Ouellette’s arrest by Trooper Thomas Welch of the Maine State Police, Welch received a tip that Ouellette was going to break into the Hebron town office.

Welch parked at the nearby Hebron Fire Department. He saw a car that matched the description of Ouellette’s car from the tip.

Trooper Adam Fillebrown and Sgt. Don Shead of the Maine State Police assisted Welch and found Ouellette inside the building. According to the report, Ouellette had a pry bar, chisel, flashlight and gloves. Welch wrote that Ouellette admitted to being there with the intent of stealing the safe, which he never found.

Welch said Ouellette told them most town offices don’t have alarm systems.

At Ouellette’s initial hearing, Assistant District Attorney Joseph O’Connor said Ouellette had a long history, including many burglaries. “He has an enormous history, specializing in town office buildings,” O’Connor said.

Ouellette is not allowed to have contact with the town of Hebron or any of its municipal buildings. He was ordered to stay away from town halls, but may go to Lewiston City Hall, during business hours, for resident business.
