FARMINGTON — Saint Joseph’s College used a late run to pull away from University of Maine at Farmington to grab a 57-47 win in non-conference men’s basketball game at Dearborn Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The game was the season opener for both teams.
Zach O’Brien led the Monks with 19 points and capped off St. Joe’s 9-0 run with a layup with 2:10 to play to help the visitors to a 53-45 advantage. Chris Petzy followed O’Brien with 13 points. O’Brien and Petzy each grabbed seven rebounds.
Pet Sumner paced UMF with 14 points with Joe McCloskey supplying nine points and seven boards.
After the two teams see-sawed through the opening seven minutes with a Ben Johnson layup giving the hosts a 13-12 edge, St. Joe’s scored the game’s next nine points with a Petzy 3, giving the Monks a 21-13 lead with 10:23 left in the half.
The Beavers held the Monks scoreless for nearly 10 minutes to close out the opening frame, but could not muster much offense either as the visitors led 24-18 at the break.
Women’s basketball
St. Joe’s 56, UMF 46
FARMINGTON — Saint Joseph’s College held off the University of Maine at Farmington take home a 56-46 win in a non-conference women’s basketball game Wednesday at Dearborn Gymnasium.
The game was the season opener for both teams.
Ashley Geel pounded away in the paint for the Monks with 14 points and 13 rebounds, with Megan McDevitt providing 11 points and five assists and Lindsay Moore adding 10 points off the bench.
Emma Morrison scored 13 points for UMF, while Lindsay Ranquist netted 11 points in her collegiate debut.
The two teams — combining for 28 turnovers and 23.2 percent shooting — slogged through the opening half, with the Monks outscoring the Beavers 13-3 over the first eight minutes.
The Monks took a 22-10 lead on a Moore basket, but Bianca Stoutamyer and Morrison each scored to cut the deficit to 22-14 at intermission.
