LEWISTON — A Portland man who was wounded by police after he ran down an officer two weeks ago was charged with robbery Thursday in connection with the purse-snatching of an elderly woman at a local supermarket.

Police said Kyle Corey, 43, pushed and threw the woman to the ground as she was walking into Shaw’s on East Avenue, then grabbed her purse. The incident occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 5.

The victim, Carolyn Burke, 77, was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for minor injuries, police said.

Several witnesses at the scene gave descriptions of the black-hatted assailant to police as well as a description of his getaway vehicle and a partial registration number.

Three days later, police chased a car in Lewiston that had reportedly been stolen in Portland. The vehicle matched the description of the car Burke’s assailant used to flee the scene at Shaw’s.

The chase ended at the Lincoln Street garage when Corey was shot after he knocked down an officer with the car.

The driver of the stolen car, Richard Thorpe, 30, of Norway gave chase in the stolen white Ford Focus on Walnut and Bartlett streets shortly after midnight. The chase — which wound through Lewiston and Auburn streets — ended about an hour later, when the car he drove crashed into a fence in a parking lot on Chestnut Street. Thorpe rammed a cruiser and fled on foot. He was later caught by officers at the scene.

Corey, who was a passenger, got into the driver’s seat and started to ram a different cruiser in an effort to leave the scene. He knocked an officer to the ground before an Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department deputy shot at him, hitting him in the shoulder. He sped forward in the car and got stuck on a fence, police said. He was later taken into custody.
