CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Traffic is flowing on two new bridges on Route 27 that replace spans washed out by floodwaters from Tropical Storm Irene.

The Department of Transportation is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday to mark the reopening of the North Branch and the Brackett Brook bridges near the entrance road to the Sugarloaf ski resort. The Brackett Brook Bridge opened to traffic about two weeks ago, and the North Branch Bridge opened this week.

Two temporary bridges were erected to keep traffic moving after the permanent bridges collapsed within minutes of each other on Aug. 28.

Tropical Storm Irene dumped more than 8.5 inches of rain in the Carrabassett Valley area, causing the bridges to wash out.
