“No more full barrels of beer — half-barrels the limit in size,” according to recent orders given out in Lewiston’s rum circles. Various theories have been advanced by the uninitiated, as to the meaning of the “new orders.” Some say it means one thing and some another. All seem to agree that it doesn’t mean less beer, but more containers. The situation in Lewiston is little changed except that conditions are growing wider open every day.
50 years ago, 1961
The prolonged tearing-up of Blanchette Avenue for the installation of a sewer line to the new East Avenue junior high school has residents of the street wondering just how long they are going to have to put up with such inconveniences as taking their garbage 400 feet to the end of the street, not being able to put their cars in their driveways for days at a time and wading through deep mud to get on or off their properties. The delay is caused by ledge, which has to be blasted before the line can be laid. The owners of homes on the street say that they are “fed up.”
25 years ago, 1986
The city of Lewiston has named Christopher Crovo its chief engineer, according to Public Works Director Christopher C. Branch.
Crovo formerly worked under Branch’s supervision as assistant city engineer. He joined the staff 18 months ago.
Mike Paradis of Bath has been named assistant chief engineer, Branch said. He joined the department Monday.
