100 years ago, 1911
An amusing scene took place on Main Street near Bates Street yesterday forenoon when a crate which contained two live chickens fell from an express wagon. The crate broke and both of the occupants gained their freedom. The expressman had a lively time for several minutes but with the aid of several bystanders finally succeeded in recapturing the chickens.
50 years ago, 1961
A sudden and unexpected glimpse of the Montagnard Band, Lewiston’s only brass band, was seen on Sunday night’s episode of “Bus Stop” aired on ABC-TV. Band members who saw the show said that the scene apparently was a bit of film taken from the movie “Peyton Place” filmed several years ago at Camden. The Montagnard Band at that time was hired by the production studio to take part in a parade scene, a segment of the movie.
25 years ago, 1986
Five Bates College students from Maine have been named winners of L.L. Bean Scholarships for 1986-87.
They are Jeffrey Caron of Thomaston, Brian Davis of Falmouth, Kern Karkos of Wilton, Russell Libby of West Buxton and Donna Roy of Lewiston. L.L. Bean established the scholarships in 1982 with a grant to Bates of $250,000. The fund provides financial assistance to well-qualified students with a preference to undergraduates from Maine.
