100 years ago, 1911

A large double hitch farm wagon collided with a driving wagon owned by E. H. Timberlake in front of Atwood’s Market yesterday forenoon. The horses attached to the farm wagon became frightened and started down Lisbon street coming in contact with the smaller team. The left forward wheel of Mr. Timberlake’s wagon was completely smashed and other damage done. It is said that the double hitch belonged to E. S. Danforth of Sabattus.

50 years ago, 1961

CAPE CANAVERAL, FLA — An ape named Enos will pioneer the space trail Wednesday, if all goes well, for a U.S. astronaut to follow.

Whether the United States will go all-out to place an astronaut in orbit before the year’s end will depend on the success of the chimpanzee shot, now scheduled for some time between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.

As usual the school hockey pre-season round-robin at the Youth Center Friday came down to the Lewiston-St.Dom’s finale, with the Doms clinching first-night leadership by virtue of their 1-0 success against the Blue Devils. The Saints finished at 4-0 in wins and losses for their appearances in the ten-period series, which continues with another ten Saturday evening, beginning at 5:30 o’clock.
