SOUTH PARIS — D. Norma Twitchell, 94, of Oxford, died Thursday, Dec. 15, at Market Square Health Care Center.
She was born in Vinalhaven, Oct. 1, 1917, the daughter of Chaney and Julia (Burdeen) Gray. She was educated in Vinalhaven schools. She graduated from high school in 1936, Farmington three-year Normal School in 1939, and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono in 1964.
Norma was a school teacher by profession. She taught in Mechanic Falls, Thomaston, Hope Corner, East Stoneham and Oxford schools over a span of 33 years. In 1945, she was married to John Twitchell, who died in 1981. She was a member of the South Paris Congregational Church, the Maine Teacher’s Association and the Maine State Retired Teacher’s Association. She spent her summers in Vinalhaven and belonged to the Senior Citizens and Extension.
Survivors include two sons John Jr. and his wife, Lynn, of Readfield and Clinton of Oxford; four grandsons, E. Jason and his wife, Jessica, Ai Justin and his wife, Nicole, C. Joel and M. Joshua; two great-granddaughters, Margaret Lynn and Hailee Justine Twitchell; and one great-grandson, Benjamin Gray Twitchell.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Fred and Walter; and her sister, Frances Oakes.
