Fresh from continued triumphs in other cities, the famous Red Sox Quartette, yesterday opened a week’s engagement at Music Hall. The coming of The Red Sox has been patiently awaited by the amusement going public of these cities, and when the opportunity presented itself, the pent-up enthusiasm broke forth into a mighty tumult, letting the heroes of the baseball diamond know that we were awful glad they were with us.
50 years ago, 1962
There will be free bus rides for downtown shoppers tonight.
William P. Tewhey, executive vice president of the Lewiston Chamber of Commerce, reported that stores will be open until 8:45 p.m. for the convenience of shoppers, and that bus rides will be free between the hours of 6 and 9 p.m..
He explained that the Chamber, in cooperation with Hudson Bus Lines, will pay for the operating costs of the buses during the three hour period.
25 years ago, 1987
Lisbon residents and officials are relieved to learn that the apparent reason the Sabattus River in Lisbon has not been freezing over yet this year is because the floodgates at Sabattus lake, which should have been closed Nov. 1, were still open on Dec. 29.
Selectman William “Bob” Donovan, with tongue in cheek, put to rest some of the rumors that were circulating earlier this week about why there was no ice on the river … “It definitely was not the alewives that were put in Sabattus Lake eating the ice crystals, or a fire-breathing dragon in the river, as some people claimed to have seen, but just an open floodgate.
