100 years ago, 1912

Eddie Coombs earned the right to be classed among the best bowlers in Lewiston, or in the state, for that matter, when he gave a beautiful exhibition of pin picking at the L. and A. Alleys last evening. Coombs started off like a whirlwind and finished up like a cyclone and three ring circus combined. When Eddie saw a pin that looked as if it might straighten up again, he simply took a long breath and blew it down. At any rate, that’s the way it looked to a few of the other men trying for the three string total prize.

50 years ago, 1962

Lewiston police officers have been challenged to a bowling match by the Portland Police Department and a Saturday morning showdown has been arranged, it was learned yesterday.

Two five-man teams will go to the firing line for each department with the fireworks scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Holiday Lanes on Westminster Street, reported Patrolman Paul F. Martin of the LPD.

25 years ago, 1987

A fire that left more than 24 people homeless in Auburn early Friday morning was caused by a candle which had been left burning overnight in the basement of the 10-apartment building, according to fire officials.

The apartment building located at 208 Main St. was a total loss.
