100 years ago, 1912

About 60 workmen, comprising the greater part of the force of ironers at the factory of the Bates Street Shirt Factory, quit work Monday. The walkout followed the refusal of the company to take back three employees discharged last week. Officials of the company declined to make a statement last evening.

50 years ago, 1962

J. Donald Belleville, of Lewiston, was appointed to a Jordan School teaching assignment yesterday afternoon by the Lewiston Board of Education and becomes instructor of eighth grade American history on Jan. 29. He will be graduated this month from the University of Maine.

Belleville will fill a vacancy caused by the recent resignation of Vernon Kelley, reported Schools Supt. J. Weldon Russell.

25 years ago, 1987

A committee of volunteers is reviewing applications for the position of executive director of LPL Plus APL, the acclaimed nonprofit program that sponsors dance, theater, music and other cultural programs in the Twin Cities.

City officials are advertising nationally for a replacement for Jeffrey J. Nichols, who resigned from the position in December to teach drama at the University of Maine.
