A crew of men with plows were at work all day yesterday leveling off the snow on the North Bridge and carting it away. It was so deep and had been thrown up on the sides in such a manner that it was impossible for a sleigh to get across without keeping to the car track and the traffic was somewhat delayed on this account.
50 years ago, 1962
Elmer Richardson and Lucien Berry, Lewiston, have shot six bobcats since the last part of December. The cats are hanging in front of Richardson’s Garage on Route 4. One was found in Phillips, one in Farmington and the other four around the Androscoggin River in Turner and Leeds. The largest bobcat weighs around 36 pounds, while the rest average around 24 to 28 pounds each.
25 years ago, 1987
Plans were announced Sunday to raise $750,000 to build an amphitheater that would seat 5,000 people on the shore of Lake Auburn.
If funds are raised on schedule, the Lakeside Center for the Performing Arts would open in 1989 on the grounds of the Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute.
Barbara Trafton said private backers have already donated $25,000 to study the idea. Architectural plans that can be submitted to the Department of Environmental Protection are being developed.
