Manager Leonard Smith of the Bates Musical Club is negotiating with Manager Harold Ashey of the Bowdoin Musical Clubs in regard to a joint concert to be held in Lewiston about the first of March. The concert between these two clubs last year proved a success.
50 years ago, 1962
According to the Maine Employment Security Service, 26,800 persons were employed in non-agricultural jobs in the Lewiston-Auburn area at mid-month in December.
This figure was up 200 jobs over the same time a month before, according to the MESC. The leather and leather products industries, miscellaneous durable goods industries and trade industries each added 100 workers while the construction trades dropped 100.
25 years ago, 1987
A Lisbon Street merchant Tuesday night asked Lewiston city councilors to consider extending parking limits on the street to 90 minutes. The current 30-minute limit is not enough to encourage shoppers to visit the area, according to Maurice Mailloux, owner of Dodge Clothing Inc. The limit is not enforced strictly enough, either, he said. He said he will seek support from other merchants and discuss the matter again at an upcoming council meeting.
