He was born July 19, 1919, in Oakland, the son of Newman L. and Mildred V. (Bickford) Kennison. Harland attended school in Oakland.
On Nov. 11, 1940, in Oakland, he married Lucie E. Mitchell. Lucie passed away in June 2003. Harland moved his family to Monmouth in 1948, where he worked as a herdsman for 25 years at the Woolworth Estate in East Monmouth. He worked with dairy cattle most of his life.
