MEXICO — Selectmen approved an amendment to the town’s all-terrain vehicles ordinance Tuesday night that expands the number of roads they can travel on to connect with trails.
They also heard a presentation by Rumford police Sgt. Tracey Higley on a communitywide plan to encourage graduating seniors and other young adults to avoid the use of alcohol and texting while driving, and date violence.
A hearing preceded the decision on the ATV amendment, which allows the use of Poplar Hill, Thompson Hill, Leavitt Street, Riverside Avenue, Dix Avenue and Holman Avenue. Also, the policy was amended to include a 15 mph speed limit for such vehicles in place of a 10 mph limit.
Roland Patneaude, a member of the Roxbury ATV Club, plans to erect signs along the routes that provide the allowable speed limits.
Use of the streets allows ATV riders to access trails as well as to get into town to buy food, fuel and other items, Selectman Reggie Arsenault said.
“If we get reports that they are not abiding by the rules, this will return to the board. We’ll give them a chance to prove themselves,” he said.
Selectmen personally donated $80 to the Keeping Students Safe program, and also voted to provide a $75 donation from the town’s contingency fund.
Higley said area police departments, ambulance service, fire departments and many members of the community are working to develop a two-day event known as “Every 15 Minutes,” aimed at showing the impact of serious injuries and deaths of young people on their families, friends and the community as a whole.
He said the event takes place on May 8 and 9.
Also at Tuesday’s board meeting, selectmen approved the purchase of a 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe four wheel drive sport utility vehicle for use by the Mexico Police Department at a cost of $27,698, including trade-in. The Police Department has the money for the purchase.
Police Chief Jim Theriault said the current 2005 Tahoe has 180,000 miles on it and is ready to replace. He said it has been a reliable police vehicle.
“Cars have been good for three years and we’ve had the Tahoe for seven,” he said.
The board also approved the renewal of the license for Brandy Pond LLC Trailer Park, and the renewal of the liquor license for Far East Restaurant.
