OXFORD — A registered sex offender was charged Tuesday with sexually assaulting a woman in Oxford earlier this month.

Stephen Ray Gravel, 51, of 135 Yeaton Swamp Road in Oxford was charged with gross sexual assault, failure to register as a sex offender, violating his probation and on a warrant for failure to pay fines in Augusta District Court.

Lt. Michael Ward of the Oxford Police Department said Gravel assaulted a woman on March 1. The incident is still under investigation, and further charges are possible, he said. Ward said he arrested Gravel on a gross sexual assault charge in 2008.

According to the Maine Sex Offender Registry, Gravel has a conviction in Oxford County Superior Court for gross sexual assault in 2008 and one in Augusta for gross sexual misconduct in 1979. He is a lifetime registrant, according to the registry.

Ward said the failure-to-register charge stemmed from a recent move from a different Oxford address. He said Gravel had failed to notify authorities of the move.

Gravel’s bail was set at $20,000 cash Wednesday in South Paris District Court. He did not enter a plea.
