Muriel Schwinn of Auburn (Edward Little), a junior on the women’s track and field squad at Hamilton (N.Y.) College, was named to the NESCAC winter all-academic team.
To qualify for the distinction, athletes must be varsity letter winners with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35 and have reached at least their sophomore year.
Schwinn capped her season with a ninth-place finish in the 60-meter dash at the New York state championship meet.
Bates senior Juliana Kirkland of Turner (Leavitt) and Bowdoin sophomore Katherine Harmon of Auburn (Edward Little) also made the NESCAC honor roll for their respective track teams.
CATS’ BEST BAT
St. Dom’s graduate Mary Lewis is the leading hitter through 10 games for the Bates College softball team.
Lewis is batting .412 with 14 hits, all singles, while leading the Bobcats with 12 runs and seven stolen bases.
Bates’ junior has been a rock at third base, starting all 69 games in her career. Lewis led the Bobcats in her rookie season of 2010 with a .423 average.
DOUBLE WHAMMY
Two Mt. Blue products helped their hometown school pick up its first men’s lacrosse victory of the season this past week.
Junior Brandon Melville scored two goals and sophomore Ben Altmeier chipped in two goals and an assist to power the University of Maine at Farmington past Wheelock, 15-3.
Hunter Rowell of West Paris (Oxford Hills) made six saves to notch the win for the Beavers.
SHE’S A HIT
Kayla Merrill of Bethel (Telstar) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the second game of a softball doubleheader Friday, helping Husson complete a 7-3 and 10-4 sweep of Colby.
Merrill, an outfielder and pitcher, has appeared in nine of 14 games for the Eagles (9-5) and is second on the team with a .467 batting average.
HOT IN THE SUN
Senior catcher Jack MacVane of Mechanic Falls (Poland) batted ,429 with a team-high four RBIs for the University of Maine at Farmington on its recent Florida baseball trip.
Livermore Falls’ Zach Keene notched Farmington’s lone RBI in a loss to Southern Maine. Joe Sullivan of Lewiston gave up nine hits over four innings in his first collegiate pitching start against Florida Christian.
Chris Whitney of Lisbon, a sophomore, had three hits for the Beavers during the southern swing.
LAST LINE OF DEFENSE
Lewiston junior Kyle Dussault made 11 saves for Southern Maine in a hard-fought 13-10 men’s lacrosse defeat at New England College.
Dussault stopped 62 percent of the shots he faced through the Huskies’ first five games, backstopping USM to a 3-2 mark.
Other local contributors for the Huskies include Lewiston alum Zach Blauvelt and EL product Austin Polisky, who have combined for three saves, and Hebron grad Terry McLellan of Lewiston, who has started all five games.
