LEWISTON — Michael Miclon’s film production company, Boo Dog Films, will hold a kick-off event Saturday, April 21. The event will showcase actors and filmmakers involved in creating “Richard 3,” a feature-length comedy based on Shakespeare’s “Richard III,” which will begin shooting this summer in Maine.

Attendees will learn how the film will be created and how they can be involved in the production as extras, volunteers and crew. Ale House String Band, an Oddfellow Theater favorite, will provide music, with the cast in and out of character. There will be raffles, a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres.

In October 2005, Miclon andOddfellow Theater embarked on one of the most successful productions of its 14-year run, “Richard 3.” Along with Matthew Tardy, Miclon set out to find a way to make Shakespeare’s “Richard III” come to life through comedy.

The famed play of a hunchback maniacal king who murders his way to the top surprisingly and easily lent itself to the absurd. The duo created a script that tells the story, adding a twist or two and trimming away some of the less essential parts of the story — utilizing everything in their performing arsenal, from improvisation to juggling.

Since 2005, the idea of bringing this adaptation to the big screen has been percolating; and, in August 2011, the decision was made that this would be Boo Dog Films’ first feature-length film.

Miclon spent the next three months turning their live performance script into a screenplay. Clearing away some of the limitations of the small stage, this adaptation will have all the large-scale splendor of Shakespeare, from castles to battles, without sacrificing any of the up-close-and-personal comedy for which Miclon and Tardy are known.

The kick-off event will be from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Royal Oak Room at 1 Bates St. Tickets are $25 per person, with proceeds benefiting the film project. To purchase tickets, visit www.boodogfilms.com.
