AUBURN — Eleanor D. Betts, 96, formerly of Topsfield, Mass., died March 28, at Clover Manor. The family extends their appreciation to the staff of Clover Manor, Galway Unit for showing a tremendous amount of care, compassion and love.

She formerly lived in Topsfield, Mass., where she was a resident for nearly 60 years. Born in Foxboro, Mass., Oct. 27, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Leslie (Coombs) Dunbar. She graduated from Foxboro High School and then attended Leland Powers Drama School in Boston.
A talented musical artist, Ellie was known for her radio show. She became a band vocalist in the Boston and Cape Cod area in the 1930s. She produced some records during this time frame. During her married life, she enjoyed being involved with various drama clubs and associated productions. Ellie was a clerk for the Ipswich Civilian Defense during the War.
Ellie enjoyed entertaining their many friends and was known for hosting great parties. From the late 50s to the late 60s, Ellie and her husband, Bob, were active members of the Topsfield Tennis Club. They also enjoyed membership in the Boston Yacht Club out of Marblehead Harbor, with trips up and down the New England Coast on their 28 foot Owens Cabin Cruiser, the”Salty B’s II.”
Ellie was a member and volunteer for the Topsfield-Boxford Community Club and was co-founder of the Box-Top Shop to help support the local VNA. She was a longtime volunteer at Beverly Hospital. Through the 70s till the mid 80s, when her husband had his first stroke, they enjoyed a good part of their winters in Venice, Fla., and a good part of their summers at Bailey’s Island. They also enjoyed frequent trips to Provincetown, Mass., which is where they were married in 1938.
Ellie did her best to stay in her own home as long as possible. She enjoyed being part of the Topsfield “Old Guard” and having many friends and acquaintances in the area. The family expresses deep appreciation to the many people who helped and cared for her during the last few and more difficult years.
Eleanor is survived by her son, R. Cameron Betts and wife, Heather; two grandsons, Christopher Betts and wife, Nicole and Ethan Betts and wife, Karen; and one new addition, a great-granddaughter, Esme.
She was the wife of the late Robert E. Betts; and sister of the late H. Verne Dunbar.
