LEWISTON — The Bates College baseball team pounded out 33 hits and limited Becker College to eight over two seven-inning games, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday by winning 13-0 in Game 1 and 10-1 in Game 2.
Mike Ciummei had five hits on the day, leading five Bates players who had four or more hits. Nate Pajka was 4-for-7, including his sixth home run of the season.
Griff Tewksbury was 4-for-6 with a double and a triple, and Kevin Davis was also 4-for-6 with two doubles.
Kevin McGregor was 4-for-7 on the day and tied Ciummei for the team lead with four runs driven in.
Bates senior Karl Alexander pitched five shutout innings in Game 1 to earn his 15th career victory, moving into a tie for first place on Bates’ all-time wins list with Mike Kinsman, who went 15-7 in his career. Alexander raised his career record to 15-13, and his season record to 4-3, allowing just three hits and no walks.
Weston Meehan and Todd Tompkins collected three hits apiece for Becker (14-12), combining for six of the Hawks’ eight hits on the day.
Bates (14-10) jumped out to big leads in both games, scoring eight in the first inning of Game 1 and five in the first in Game 2.
Bates Game 2 starter Dean Bonneau was staked to a big lead early on and took advantage with a solid five-inning effort. Bonneauallowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four in his five inning
Maine extends win streak to 12
ORONO —The University of Maine extended its winning streak to 12 games with a doubleheader sweep of Hartford at Mahaney Diamond.
Ian Leisenheimer led the Black Bears with four hits on the day.
In the first game, Maine (19-14) got in the board in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Calbick and Fran Whitten recorded back-to-back singles. Justin Leisenheimer was hit to load the bases. Troy Black reached on a fielder’s choice and Calbick scored. Whitten scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch. Black and Michael Fransoso scored when Colin Gay reached on an error.
Hartford (8-24) got a run in the top of the fourth inning on Simon Kudernatsch RBI double.
Maine added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on Gay’s two-run doubled. Stephen Perakslis allowed just one run on a pair of hits while striking out three to pick up the win for Maine
In the second game, Maine grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Justin Leisenheimer’s sacrifice fly.
The Black Bears added a pair of runs in the third inning, then continued to add to their lead in the fourth on a Fransoso sacrifice fly and Gay’s RBI single.
Maine starter Shaun Coughlin went 5 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. He stuck out five.
Mike Connolly went the final 3 1/3 to earn his third save of the season. He allowed just two hits while striking out five.
USM sweeps pair
GORHAM — Tucker White went 4-for-9 with three runs scored and nine RBI as the University of Southern Maine swept a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader from Western Connecticut State University.
The Huskies (14-11) took the opener 6-5 on White’s ninth-inning RBI single, then came back to pound out 19 hits en route to a 21-7, seven-inning win in the nightcap.
In the opener, White gave the Huskies the victory with a single through the right side to score Jake Glauser. Glauser reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Matt Powers walked to put runners at first and second. After an infield popout, Matt Verrier reached on an error that would have ended the inning. White followed with his walk-off hit.
White’s hit made a winner of junior southpaw Nick Douglass. Douglass pitched 2 1/3 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief with three strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. Nick Vig, who came on to get the final out in the seventh inning, was the tough-luck loser for the Colonials (10-16).
The Huskies’ bats were alive in the second game piling up 19 hits. White had seven RBI in the nightcap, including a grand slam and a two-run triple in the fourth.
Powers led the offensive assault with four hits, including a double. David Ricker, Nick Grady and Forrest Chadwick all had three hits.
Conor Bierfeldt had four hits, including a double and two home runs, for the Colonials. Bierfeldt and Zack Dandrea hit back-to-back homers for the Colonials
Logan Carman picked up the win for the Huskies, while Luke Hammond closed the game out with an inning in relief.
Softball
UMF takes two from GMC
POULTNEY, VT — The University of Maine-Farmington exploded for 25 hits, including 10 for extra bases, en route to a doubleheader sweep of Green Mountain College in North Atlantic Conference women’s softball action Saturday.
Kaitlyn Bartlett hit a home run in each game, finishing 5-for-6 with five runs scored and four RBI to lead the Beavers to an 11-3 victory in the first game and a 16-5 win in the second.
Green Mountain took a 1-0 lead in the opening contest when Chelsea Paul hit an RBI double knocking in Emma Lord in the bottom of the first. The advantage, however, was short-lived as Farmington took the lead for good plating two runs in the top of the second. The visitors added three more in the third, four in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to polish of the home side.
The Beavers opened the back half of the doubleheader the way they finished Game 1, knocking home seven runs in the first. After a Shannon Mitchell homer to centerfield gave Farmington a 3-0 lead, two Eagles’ miscues allowed four more runs to score. Mitchell added a second homerun in the third, followed by a three-run shot from Amy Jones which spurred a six-run output in the fourth, putting the game out of reach.
Bartlett earned the win in the first game, giving up two earned runs and striking out seven over six innings of work, improving her record to 5-4. Anna Piggott gave up one earned run in five innings, earning the victory in the second contest moving to 1-1 on the year.
Mitchell turned in a 3-for-7 performance at the plate for the Beavers (10-10) with three RBI. Jones finished the day 3-for-6 at the dish plating four runs and scoring five.
Lord recorded both losses on the mound for the Eagles, giving up 17 earned runs on 25 hits, with five strikeouts over 11 innings.
The Eagles (1-22) were led offensively by Paul, who finished the day going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
Maine sweeps Binghamton
ORONO — Hilary Kane and Jessica Burk blasted grand slams in back-to-back games to help lead the University of Maine to a doubleheader sweep of Binghamton at Kessock Field.
Maine took Game 1 by a score of 8-2 before defeating the Bearcats, 4-2, in Game 2. The two wins give the Black Bears their first America East victories of the season as they move to 9-24 overall, while Binghamton falls to 15-21.
In Game 1, Binghamton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Chelsea Horne’s RBI double.
Maine answered with four runs in the home half of the first on Kane’s grand slam.
Jessica Phillips brought the Bearcats within a pair of runs in the top of the fifth as she hit her ninth home run of the year to left field. The Black Bears quickly answered again, this time with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth on an errant throw and a passed ball to take a 6-2 lead.
Maine added two more in the sixth on Dagmar Ralphs’ two-run single.
Ashley Kelley went the distance to grab her fourth win of the season after giving up two runs on six hits while fanning two. Kristen Emerling took the loss for Binghamton.
In Game 2, Burk ripped her first career home run, a grand slam, in the third inning to give Maine an early 4-0 lead.
Binghamton plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on Mikala King’s single, but that would be as close as the Bearcats would get as Maine starter Beth Spoehr went the distance to nail down her third win of the season. Spoehr gave up two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Demi Laney picked up the loss for the Bearcats as she went 3 2/3 innings while giving up four runs on six hits and a walk while fanning five.
