AUGUSTA — The state Gambling Control Board approved the casino license for the Oxford Casino on Tuesday.
Black Bear Development submitted its application for the Casino Operator’s License in September. The license fee to run a casino is $225,000, and the 25-page application asks for the applicant’s financial history, a detailed business plan and a list of shareholders, partners, creditors and others involved in the casino.
The Gambling Control Board voted 4-0 to approve the license.
“It’s another milestone,” casino spokesman Scott Smith said. “It’s a big moment for us.” Smith said a few licenses remain, including the state liquor license and health license. “We’re just down to food and beverage,” Smith said.
Last Saturday, 630 people came to a job fair at the Poland Spring Resort. Smith said the casino is currently conducting background checks on about 300 of those applicants who they could potentially hire.
Smith said the casino will have about 350 employees when it opens in June, but that number could increase as casino operators decide where they need more help. Smith said there will be about 90 people dealing and supporting the 12 table games, including craps, roulette, blackjack and poker.
