GREAT LAKE, Ill. — Navy Seaman Recruit Nelson B. Metayer, son of Kathleen A. Metayer of Auburn, Maine, and Sanford N. Metayer, of Lewiston, Maine, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command.

During the eight-week program, Metayer completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

He earned the National Defense Medal and the Pistol Marksmanship Medal. On Jan. 7, he left for Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas for 17 weeks of Seabee training.

Metayer is a 2011 graduate of Edward Little High School of Auburn.
