Time Warner Cable announced it is boosting speeds for all of the company’s residential Internet customers across Maine, beginning today, and launching new service tiers for customers.

According to a press release from Time Warner Cable, the faster speeds are designed to meet the demands of today’s broadband home, where consumers are using multiple devices to stream video and music, play games online, upload photos and download movies as well as other large files.

The top downstream speed for Turbo Internet increased from 15 to 20 megabits per second (mbps) and from 1 to 2 mbps upstream. Standard Internet downstream speeds increased from 8 to 10 Mbps and upstream speeds doubled from 512 kilobits per second (Kbps) to 1 Mbps. Downstream speeds for Basic Internet doubled from 1.5 to 3 Mbps and from 256 Kbps to 1 Mbps upstream.

The faster speeds will be in effect automatically for all residential Time Warner Cable Internet customers across Maine with no change in the current price of the service.

Time Warner Cable is also launching new tiers of consumer Internet service utilizing DOCSIS 3.0 technology. Customers can order services of up to 50 mbps downstream and 5 mbps upstream.

For customers of Time Warner Cable’s Business Class services, the company plans to launch next-generation Wideband speed tiers early next month.
