PORTLAND — Oakhurst Dairy, northern New England’s largest independent family-owned dairy company, recognized its top dairy farms from around the state for outstanding milk quality, cow health and farm cleanliness at the company’s recent annual producers luncheon.
Ten farms were recognized for overall quality with the top five receiving awards. Oakhurst also presented certificates to farms scoring high in four individual milk quality categories.
The top five overall quality farms included: R.E. Hemond Inc., of Minot; Highland Farms, Inc., of Cornish; Deerfield Farm of Winterport; Androscoggin Holsteins of Leeds; and Hemond Hill Farm of Minot. These farms received a plaque and a cash gift from Oakhurst Dairy.
The remaining five producers recognized in the top 10 include: Aghaloma Farms of Knox; Silver Maple Farms Inc., of Albion; Hilton Farm of Norridgewock; East Ledge Farm of Leeds; and Scott Farm of Garland.
R.E. Hemond Inc., run by Rick Hemond, received the Oakhurst Dairy Producer of the Year Award, making it the farm’s fourth year in a row to reach the top spot. The Oakhurst Dairy Producer of the Year award is presented to the farm that receives the company’s highest quality ratings across multiple categories. R.E. Hemond Inc., has been producing milk for Oakhurst for 25 years.
The fourth place ranking went to John and Sandy Nutting of Androscoggin Holsteins. John and Irene Hemond of Hemond Hill Farm rounded out the top five producer list.
Farms receiving certificates in the four individual milk quality categories include: Androscoggin Holsteins, Nickerson Hill Farms of Brooks and operated by Thomas Yori, and Aghaloma Farms run by the Larabee Family. Aghaloma Farms walked away with two individual category awards.
More than 35 farms and Oakhurst staff attended the luncheon at the Elks Lodge in Waterville.
