CARTHAGE — Kathleen Gorey-McSorley, an accomplished 17-year-old fiddler from Canada, will perform at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center on Sunday, May 20.

Primarily an Irish/Celtic fiddler, Gorey-McSorley also enjoys Appalachian, Cajun and French-Canadian styles.

She was recently awarded the gold medal by the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto for highest ranking in the Atlantic region for music theory and practical performance in classical violin.

A member of the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra, Gorey-McSorley also plays piano, mandolin, banjo and tin whistle, and has begun to incorporate vocals into her performances. She is also an award-winning Irish dancer and dabbles in Cape Breton step dancing. She is accompanied by pianist Carolyn Holyoke.

Gorey-McSorley has also performed in Ireland, Scotland and the United States. She competed at the Fleadh Cheoil (festival of Irish music/competition) in Ireland in 2008 and 2010; and at the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championships in Ottawa in 2009 and 2010.

She appeared in two concerts with famed fiddler Ashley MacIsaac in January 2010 and showcased at Canada’s Contact East” performing arts conference in September 2010. In July 2010, she released her second CD, “Ceol Binn” (Irish for “Sweet Music”),  nominated for an ECMA award as Roots/Traditional Solo Recording of the Year. She also received two Music New Brunswick nominations for this CD, Roots Traditional Recording of the Year and Instrumental Recording of the Year.

“This girl has talent, plenty of it, and her name deserves to be well known far beyond her New Brunswick home,” wrote Alex Monaghan  in Irish Music Magazine’s February 2012 issue. “With a full deep tone, her fiddle sounds mature and authoritative. She puts her own stamp on the music.”

Gorey-McSorley will perform at 7 p.m. as part of the Patriot Renewables Emerging Artist Series. A jam session is scheduled one hour prior to curtain.  Tickets are $15 at the door. For reservations, call 562-4445. Skye Theater is 2 Highland Drive.
