AUBURN — Bangor coach Jeff Fahey merely shrugged when informed his starting pitcher threw just 14 balls in his 76-pitch shutout of Edward Little on Friday.
“Geez, that many?” Fahey said.
He was only half-joking.
Curtis Worcester showed supreme command of the strike zone in his complete game two-hitter as unbeaten Bangor blanked Edward Little, 7-0, at Auburn Suburban Little League’s Austin Field.
The senior lefty, bound for the University of Southern Maine, struck out nine and didn’t allow a baserunner past second base.
“A big part of that is confidence in the guys behind me,” Worcester said. “I know that all you’ve got to do is throw strikes and let them hit the ball and the guys behind me will make the plays every single time.”
Worcester’s defense backed up his faith in it with errorless baseball and one terrific catch by center fielder Chris Corneil.
With two out in the first, Josh Delong ripped the first pitch he saw to left-center. Corneil got an excellent jump and had to run a long way to catch up with it at the fence, roughly 330 feet from home plate. He didn’t break stride once he got there, robbing Delong of at least extra bases and possibly a home run. His momentum when he caught the ball nearly carried him over the fence.
“That was a great play,” Worcester said. “I had no doubt he was going to catch that.”
“He’s developed into probably the best defensive outfielder I can think of in the last 25 years,” Fahey said of Corneil, who’s also headed for USM.
Worcester gave up a double to Nate Blais to lead off the second but stranded him there. Delong singled in the fourth for the Eddies’ other hit and stole second but didn’t get any further as Worcester ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts. He retired the final 11 Eddies.
“My fastball felt pretty good. I didn’t throw my curveball until the second or third inning,” Worcester said. “That was a big help, and my changeup helped a lot, too.”
Worcester didn’t go to a single three-ball count and went to two balls on just three Eddies.
“That’s kind of his MO, to work ahead in the count and not walk people,” Fahey said. “Last year, I think he had a streak of 21 consecutive innings without a walk, and in that streak he only went to three-ball counts twice.”
“He throws a ton of strikes. You’ve got to be ready. He’s going to come after you,” EL coach Scott Annear said. “It wasn’t a shock.”
Worcester got all of the run support he would need before he took the mound as EL starter Luke Farrago uncorked a wild pitch to score Wyatt Frost with two out in the top of the first.
Bangor (9-0) added another run in the second when Parker Sanderson’s ground out to third scored Brendan Moore. The Rams opened it up with a five-run fifth, highlighted by two-run singles from Corneil and Bryan Rouleau.
Corneil and Moore had two hits apiece for the Rams.
Edward Little (5-5) plays at ASLL again on Saturday, hosting Cony at 11 a.m.
