MEXICO —  Members of a River Valley classic car club will hold a debut cruise-in behind the Mexico fire station Thursday, May 31.

Organizers of the 1st annual Mexico Firemen’s Relief Association Cruise-In hope to attract 60 to 70 classic and antique cars and hot rods.

The show is a fundraiser to help the Fire Department buy a six-wheel all-terrain vehicle for remote rescues.

Sponsored by the Tired Iron Cruizers Car Club and the Mexico Firemen’s Relief Association, the show will be held from 5-8 p.m. The rain date is Friday, June 1, at the same time.

Frank Anastasio of Rumford said he dreamed up the event, got the go-ahead from Mexico Town Manager John Madigan and backing of the relief association from Chief Gary Wentzell.

Anastasio, who owns a light yellow 1966 Mustang, and Tim Pingree of Mexico, who owns a 1971 Chevrolet Stepside, said they hope to attract 60 to 70 vehicles.

“All classics, hot rods and antiques are welcome,” Anastasio said.

Car drivers will be eligible for door prizes donated by local businesses. The grand prize is an 18V Porter Cable Combo Tool Kit.

Disc jockey Dan Richard has donated his time to provide classic “Golden Oldies” music and the firemen’s relief association will provide barbecue foods.

Anastasio said they’ve been advertising the event heavily statewide and will continue to do so right up until the show.

“We hope to do this every year,” he said.
