AUBURN — The law firm of Skelton Taintor & Abbott has established an American History Essay Prize.

This is a new essay contest for middle school students in Lewiston and Auburn to write about important events in American history. The firm will select different topics each year, and this year the contest topic is the Battle of Midway, its historical context, and its significance to World War II and the fate of the world 70 years ago.

Three prizes will be awarded in the form of U.S. Savings Bonds: $1,000 for first prize, $500 for second prize and $250 for third prize.

Essays can be any length the student wishes to submit, but must be researched and written independently and originally by the student. Teachers may correct essays for clarity of expression, grammar and spelling, but may not provide assistance with the content. Students must research the battle on their own and write their own analysis.

Essays should be sent to Bryan M. Dench, Skelton Taintor & Abbott, 95 Main St., Auburn, ME 04210, or email as a PDF to [email protected]. The due date is June 1.
