FARMINGTON — Voters will be able to review next year’s school budget at a public hearing Monday at Mt. Blue High School.

At 7 p. m., the Regional School Unit 9 board will present the proposed $28.9 million budget for 2012-13 in the high school gymnasium. The final increases add approximately $3 million to next year’s spending plan. Last year’s $25.4 million budget for the district was passed by a 2-1 margin by residents in the nine district towns.

Debt service, insurance and fuel are going to cost more, but directors voted to save money by subcontracting custodial services. The move eliminates 23 benefits packages and 18 jobs, but the district will save nearly $600,000 over the next two years.

Directors added $30,000 to the technology budget and $35,000 for special education behavioral services. They also approved reinstating a math interventionist and reading specialist position, both of which were proposed cuts.

The district will gain approximately $400,000 with the addition of Starks to the district but will spend $58,000 to bus those students. Residents in Chesterville, Farmington, Industry, New Sharon, New Vineyard, Temple, Vienna, Weld and Wilton will vote in their towns on Thursday, May 24.
