GREENE — Wildlife film producer and photographer John Wilson will narrate his film “Europe’s Wild Gem — Iceland” Friday, May 25, at the Araxine Wilkins Sawyer Memorial.
Wilson began his photographic career at age 21, when he set out on a voyage of discovery from Canada to Panama by motorcycle, and then on to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. The eight-month adventure increased his love of the natural world and changed his life forever.
Upon his return to Canada, he was interviewed on radio and television, and conducted seminars on wildlife studies and photography. His still photographs have appeared in Audubon and Ontario naturalist magazines. His films have been made for the CBC television network in Canada, and his shows have appeared on the Discovery Channel and PBS networks in the United States. In 2003, he was honored with the traveloguers “Hall Of Fame” award.
Wilson is respected as a cameraman who will do just about anything to get the right shot. He has leaned out of helicopters flying over mountain peaks, scuba dived under icebergs and come face to face with a grizzly bear.
Today, he and his wife, Denice, live in a passive and active solar home on a quarter section of land in the boonies of Tweed, Ontario. Each summer, the two welcome more than 30 volunteers from around the world to teach them sustainable living and organic agriculture at their farm.
“Europe’s Wild Gem — Iceland” will be shown at 2 and 7 p.m. at Sawyer Memorial at 371 Sawyer Road. Admission is free. For more information, call 946-5311 or visit www.sawyer-foundation.com.
