DIXFIELD — At the end of a 4 1/2 hour town meeting Thursday night, residents pared $9,264 from the selectmen’s proposed $2,066,860 municipal budget.

The new total, $2,057,596, is 5.4 percent higher than the current year’s operating figure of $1,952,568. Losing small amounts of funding were the executive department, police department and public works.

Residents approved an ordinance that would update the Dixfield Fire Company’s codes and standards and approved an amended all-terrain-vehicle ordinance.

They defeated, by the narrowest of margins, the town’s plans to bring its building permit ordinance in line with state standards. Town Clerk Vickie Carrier said the vote was 25-25. When any vote is tied, it is automatically defeated.

They also approved using $110,000 from surplus to offset property taxes.

Carrier said selectmen would likely set the new tax rate sometime in early July. Currently, that rate is $18 per $1,000 valuation and includes school and county taxes as well as municipal taxes.

Residents of Dixfield and other RSU 10 member towns will vote on the proposed $35 million school budget on May 31 at a districtwide, town meeting-style election at Mountain Valley High School, then vote to validate that figure at referendum on June 12.

Also on Thursday, residents elected or re-elected William DeVries, Scott Dennett, and Aaron Perreault to the Finance Committee, Montell Kennedy to the Ione Harlow Scholarship Committee and DeVries and Kennedy to the Water Advisory Committee.
