LEWISTON — Steve Anctil, the local man accused of shooting another man in the stomach Wednesday afternoon, is expected to make his first court appearance on Friday.
Anctil is charged with robbery and elevated aggravated assault in the shooting of 63-year-old Kristopher Klimek, of Naples, who remained hospitalized a day later.
Klimek was recovering at Central Maine Medical Center after undergoing surgery for the gunshot wound. At his request, hospital officials could not release information about his condition.
Police who investigated described Klimek’s wounds as serious but said he was expected to survive.
Witnesses said Klimek was shot in the street outside an apartment house at the corner of Bates and Granite streets, a dead-end area.
The motive for the shooting was unclear. Police did not say whether Anctil and Klimek knew each other or if they had been together prior to the shooting.
Anctil, 24, has a history of robberies, thefts and other crimes in the Lewiston-Auburn area. On Thursday night, he remained at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn. Bail was set at $50,000 cash, but because of a probation hold stemming from an unrelated charge, he was ordered held at the jail.
At 1 p.m., Anctil is expected to make an appearance in 8th District Court in Lewiston.
