LEWISTON — The aging flagpole atop the Central Avenue Memorial Armory will be updated and moved to ground level, thanks to help from the Lewiston Elks Lodge 371 and other service groups.

Work is scheduled to kick off June 10, following the 11 a.m. Flag Day ceremony at the Armory.

Plans call for erecting a new flagpole and building a bench nearby.

According to a statement from the city, Elks Lodge officials learned that the current flagpole on top of the building was in need of repairs. Its location made doing those repairs difficult, and day-to-day maintenance difficult as well.

Lodge members secured a $2,000 Gratitude Grant for the project through the Elks National Foundation.

Additional donations have come from the Pastime Club, Franco-American War Veterans, Webber Club and Lewiston Emblem Club 528.

The Elks are accepting additional donations for the project and note that checks may be made payable to the Lewiston Elks Lodge and sent to 1675 Lisbon St., Lewiston, ME 04240, with a check memo stating “Flag Pole Project.”
