AUBURN — A dispatcher with the Auburn Police Department confirmed Monday night that Washington Street North at Chasse Street has been closed to traffic until further notice.
A bridge just north of Chasse Street in the 1000 block of Washington Street was flooded by the Little Androscoggin River. Northbound traffic is being diverted onto Hackett Road. Turnpike motorists are being asked to use the Lewiston exit.
Washington Street North in Auburn was closed Monday night after DOT crews determined that a large tree wedged against the bridge abutment, along with the vibration of tractor trailers crossing it might possibly cause damage to the bridge. Talking with an APD crew on hand, they agreed that with the major power lines looming, it would be too dangerous to try removing it. They expect the tree to slip under the bridge once the water level decreases Tuesday morning.
