AUBURN — City councilors will hear reports on two potential sites for a new Edward Little High School and a report on costs associated with the work Monday night.

Councilors and members of the School Committee are scheduled to meet together Monday to discuss the fate of the aging high school.

School Superintendent Katy Grondin, engineers and architects will talk about two places for a new high school: the site of the current one and land behind Auburn Middle School.

“We’re just saying here are two options,” Grondin said. “Here’s where they could be and the community can discuss them and bring together a steering committee to look at the next phases.

Then, they’ll get a report on the costs associated with building a new school without help from the state of Maine.

“We’ll talk a little bit about funding and what we, as a community, need to do to prepare for this kind of project,” she said.

Edward Little is currently on academic probation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. That group surveyed the building in 2009 and found 41 major problems with the facility, including small classroom sizes, mold and air quality problems and failing boilers.

Representatives from Harriman Associates will report on how the city could build around the existing high school, removing the old structure when the new one is finished.

Engineer Bill Hoffman will also give a report on using a new site, behind Park Avenue and Auburn Middle School.

“There are six property owners, and we asked them if they’d be open to have us evaluate them,” Grondin said. “He’s walked those properties now and he’ll share what we’ve learned.”

Grondin said property owners were not asked about selling land but only about evaluating how a school could fit in.

“We want to go for having everything at EL — all of our fields, a baseball field, softball, football and track,” she said. “Could it all fit? That’s what he’s been looking at.”

Estimates have shown a major renovation of Edward Little High School could cost $49 million. Building a new high school could cost $61 million. Attempts to get state construction money have not been successful so far.

“We were 16th in the last round,” Grondin said. “Sometimes, it’s hard to believe that there are schools out there in worse shape. What happens is every time the state goes out for new applications, new schools apply and we have to reapply right along with them. It’s not like they freeze the list and just take care of everyone.”

A single-campus plan calls for building a replacement Edward Little on some site with local taxpayer money, and no help from the state.
