SUMNER — Selectman Mary Ann Haxton wants the town to develop long-range plans, including being more self-sufficient and lowering its use of fossil fuels.

She suggested at Tuesday night’s board meeting that the town hold potluck dinners four times a year and include discussions on planning issues.

Selectman Danny Perron said the corner store has new owners and may be open to hosting a farmers market one or two days a week for local producers.

Another issue raised by Haxton was cutting the stipend for Emergency Management Director Tom Standard. She said his work has had more to do with state and federal goals, and asked how much money he had brought to the town from grants.

He said he got the town a generator and that most of his $1,800 stipend has been offset by grants.

Standard asked the town to approve his stipend for one more year while he made sure everything was in order and trained his replacement. He said that person would need a year of courses to qualify for the position.

The board said it will recommend $900 a year.

Standard said he would train someone to take his place now.

He also serves as EMA director for Hartford and Buckfield, where voters in each town approved renewing his contract for the coming year and paying him $1,800.

Sumner residents will vote on the stipend at the annual town meeting in August.
