RUMFORD — The second annual Fourth of July celebration promises to be just as entertaining, with some treaks for improvements.

Once again, there will be games for children, lots of music, a magic show (Scot Grassette), many vendors, and the addition of a car show.

To be held on Hosmer Field beginning at 4 p.m. on July 4, the event will culminate with a tribute to those who have served our country, followed by a fabulous fireworks display again presented by Atlas Pyro Vision Productions, Inc.

New this year is a car show from 5-8 on the practice soccer field, put on by Brad Adley. Games for kids will take place from 5-8, with a show from the GRCC gymnasts at 5:30, a magic show at 6:30 and the shield ceremony at 8:45.

At their June 19 meeting, members of the River Valley Fourth of July related some of the many different tasks involved with this event, which is expected to attract more than 5,000 people.

At the Board of Selectmen’s meeting Thursday, the board approved a request for $3,600 from the cable franchise fees to cover the balance of the cost for the fireworks.

Selectman Jeff Sterling, a member of the committee, said the cost of the fireworks, along with a permit fee, is about $10,100.

Board Chairman Greg Buccina, also a member of the committee, noting the committee has raised more than $6,900 to date, not including the proceeds from two upcoming fundraisers. The fund is administered by the River Valley Chamber of Commerce. Any monies left over will be put towards next year’s event.

Buccina said other expenses include $75 for a best in show trophy for the car show, $300 to Grassette as master of ceremonies, $300 for the three bands that will perform, $480 for seven porta potties, and $600 for police coverage.

Rumford Police Sgt. Tracey Higley told the committee they will have two officers on bike patrol for the event, two on regular duty after 6 p.m. as well as two more off regular duty, for a total of six officers.

Among other activities at the event, the MVHS sophomore class will be doing the snack shack; four MVHS students will sing the national anthem; the MVHS band will play some songs; and Dixfield American Legion Post 100 will have booth to hand out information.

There will also be brochures for the event, which people are asked to not throw away as three of them will yield a $25 cash prize.

The Dollar Tree purchased five boxes of items for prizes for the kids’ games, purchased from donations collected.

The committee is creating more handicapped parking spaces than there were last year. In addition, a smoking area will be established.

There will be signs at all entry point that will note that for the safety of others, no fireworks will be allowed except for sparklers.

The committee said they will try to do better with the donation buckets at the field.

If rain forces postponement of this event, it will take place the next day.
