OXFORD — The town received its first check for its share of Oxford Casino revenues this week.

Oxford’s 2 percent of slot machine and table games netted it $28,600. That’s for June 5-12, the first week in operation, Town Manager Michael Chammings said at Thursday’s meeting of the Board of Selectmen. That means the casino took in about $1.43 million during its opening week.

If the casino takes in that much every week, it would mean nearly $1.5 million for the town annually. Oxford’s 2012 budget was $3.21 million.

Chammings said the town will receive checks from the state weekly.

“They’re doing quite well,” he said, adding that it was higher than the town expected, and said that will probably increase once the casino’s expansion opens this fall.

According to the referendum allowing the Oxford Casino, 46 percent of net slot machine income and 16 percent of net table game income go to the state through the Gambling Control Board, which then divvies up the money in amounts specified by the referendum among schools, the town of Oxford, Oxford County, harness racing funds, the Penobscot Nation, the Passamaquoddy Tribe and other funds.

Chammings said the town will set its tax rates in August based on yearly revenue projections for the casino. If revenue from the casino exceeds projections, he said, it will go into a surplus fund to further offset residents’ taxes.

“The town will see a slight decrease this year in taxes,” he said. “Absolutely.”

The casino avoided a grand opening to keep from overcrowding, and often uses an outside tent to handle overflow to keep within its capacity. An expansion to the gaming floor has been under construction since before the opening.
