LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women is seeking people interested in forming a book discussion group. The first selection will be “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” donated by Gale Hart through the World Book Night program. Written by Maya Angelou and published in 1970, it was published to international acclaim and enormous popular success.
Due to the subject matter, Sarah L. Wood from the Sexual Assault Crisis Center will be co- facilitating the book group and will offer support to those who may have their own histories of abuse.
This book study group, like other groups through the Sexual Assault Crisis Center, is intended to be a support and educational group, not a therapy group. The group will decide on the number and frequency of meetings. To build the group cohesion and trust, all members are encouraged to regularly attend all sessions.
If interest continues, this study group will have the option of becoming an ongoing TREM group. TREM stands for Trauma Recovery & Empowerment. The goal of TREM is to provide a setting in which group members can offer one another support, share information and encourage healing, with each member being responsible for their own participation and path of healing.
Maya Angelou has written, “Surviving is important. Thriving is elegant.” Anyone interested in participating in this new book group is urged to contact Klara Tammany, executive director of the women’s center, at 513-3922, or Sarah Wood at SACC, 784-5272.
