JAY — The Maine Department of Transportation will hold a preliminary meeting open to the public on Wednesday on the proposed next phase of road improvement on Routes 4 and 17.
Department representatives are seeking input from the local people, road users and abutters before design is begun. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. July 11 at the Jay Town Office, Mark Hume, DOT Region 3 engineer, said.
The new project involves about 1.25 miles, beginning at Pineau Street to just south of Tweedie Street, Jay Town Manager Ruth Cushman said.
Road improvements have been ongoing on Routes 4 and 17 since May 2011, starting at Bridge Street in Livermore Falls to Pineau Street in Jay. Water and sewer lines were replaced along that route at the same time as the state’s project.
Replacing of water and sewer lines and drainage work are expected to be done in the next phase, Cushman said.
Hume said the proposed work is being treated as a new project. That means that there is a lot of work to be done, including environmental, right-of-way and design work.
The DOT project manager for this phase is Rhobe Moulton.
The overall project is estimated to cost $3.2 million. The funding is available. The construction work is tentatively scheduled to begin in late 2013 and continue into 2014, Hume said.
