JAY — Steve McCourt, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, requested Monday that selectmen discuss a fireworks ordinance at their next meeting. The state legalized certain fireworks in Maine earlier this year.

A resident requested that the board consider a fireworks ordinance but did not attend Monday’s meeting. McCourt asked that it be put back on the agenda for the 6 p.m. Monday, July 23, meeting at the Town Office.

Some complaints about fireworks being set off have been made to police.

McCourt said he has talked to several people about the issue.

They are not in favor of banning it, he said, but they would like to see the town put guidelines in place.

Maybe a committee could be formed to create an ordinance, McCourt said.

If an ordinance is proposed, it would go before voters to adopt it.
