PARIS — A Rumford man pleaded guilty to a violent assault Tuesday in Oxford County Superior Court
John P. Messier, 41, entered a guilty plea to one count of Class B aggravated assault. Police say he beat a woman, knocking out two teeth and kicking her in the ribs when she was on the floor.
Messier said he doesn’t agree with the state’s evidence but is entering a guilty plea. He said the woman attacked him first, but Assistant District Attorney Joseph O’Connor said Messier had no wounds consistent with being the victim of violence.
O’Connor said Rumford police responded to a domestic violence call at a Rumford home. Inside, they found the woman’s blood spattered on the kitchen walls. He said police reported blood around her face and on her head.
She told police they’d been arguing when he hit her in the face and kicked her in the ribs. O’Connor said she required medical treatment and is in the process of getting her teeth replaced.
Messier’s sentencing was continued until July 27, but the state agreed to a maximum sentence of five years with all but nine months suspended, three years of probation and restitution to the victim in exchange for Messier’s plea.
