AUBURN — Despite last week’s inmate population surge, compounded by recent soaring temperatures, officials reported no major issues at the Androscoggin County Jail over the weekend.

Sheriff Guy Desjardins said he left instructions to be contacted immediately if any issues arose out of overcrowding or the limited cool air circulating throughout the cinder-block building. As of Sunday evening, he said there were no calls.

A dispatcher with the jail said the inmate population as of Sunday at 7:30 p.m. was 157. That number is up slightly from Friday’s 155 inmates, but still down from the 165 inmates the jail housed Thursday, which is five beyond the 160-inmate capacity authorized by the Maine Department of Corrections.

A replacement compressor was installed Monday on the jail roof, but the compressor had been idle until Friday afternoon when the cooling system began functioning, but only at partial power. Desjardins said one of the air handling unit’s two electric starters was defective and the system is currently will only work at 50-60 percent capacity until the new starter is installed.

Desjardins said the replacement starter was ordered last week.
