LEBANON — Authorities say the 2-year-old New Hampshire girl burned when she fell into a fire pit at a Maine resort last weekend has been moved out of the intensive care unit and is improving.
The Milton, N.H., girl was airlifted to a Boston hospital with serious burns after she fell into a fire pit at Flat Rock Bridge Family Resort in Lebanon on Sunday. She was transferred out of intensive care Monday, her father said. Specialists are working with her to see what treatments will be necessary.
The girl landed on hot coals that had been smoldering all night. The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office said she suffered second- and third-degree burns to about 12 to 14 percent of her body in the accident.
Assistant Chief Jason Cole of the Lebanon Rescue Department said the incident was an accident that occurred while the girl’s mother was nearby.
“The child was outside playing with family when she apparently fell backward into the fire pit,” Cole said.
Bystanders and campground staff provided first aid until Lebanon Rescue units arrived.
Cole says recovery is expected to take a while. He said the family is very appreciative of all rescue efforts and community support.
