LEWISTON — A controversial Park Street night club has cleaned up its act enough to keep its city permits, councilors agreed Tuesday.

Deputy Police Chief Mike Minkowsky said the managers of Club Karma at Altera, 16 Park St., had put together a plan to deal with complaints and council concerns, stepped up their security and met with neighbors in nearby senior housing complex Oak Park.

“We have also had several unannounced inspections, just stopping by and we haven’t had any violations,” Minkowsky said. “I’m very pleased about that.”

City Councilors voted in June to put the club on probation due to reported liquor license violations, noise complaints and police claims of finding people younger than 21-years-old drinking alcohol in the bar.

Councilors gave owner Stephen Wallace until Tuesday to report on his efforts to increase security, stop underage drinking at the club, adopt a security plan and meet with neighbors.

Councilors took no action after hearing Minkowsky’s report. That effectively took the nightclub off of probation, reinstating its special amusement permit.

Club Karma at Altera occupies the same space as notorious Club Adrenaline, a popular 2008 nightclub that frustrated neighbors at the adjoining Oak Park Senior Housing. They complained of drunken club-goers shouting, fighting and engaging in lewd behavior on their way back to their cars along Park Street and right below many of the residents’ windows.

Complaints led the city to pass a temporary moratorium on new bars in that area in 2008. The Lewiston Planning Board considered changing zoning to keep bars out of the area permanently, but left zoning unchanged and the city lifted the moratorium.

The three-story Club Karma at Altera received its liquor license and city permits in January and opened its doors. It offered food and non-alcoholic drinks for under-aged patrons on the first floor, dancing, alcoholic drinks and a go-go dancer’s stage on the second floor and a VIP lounge with bottle service on the third floor.

Minkowsky said the club no longer allows underage patrons in the door, warns all patrons to mind themselves on entrance and escorts them out when they leave.
