SCARBOROUGH — Former President George H.W. Bush is endorsing Charlie Summers for Maine’s open U.S. Senate Seat.

The Summers for Senate campaign on Wednesday announced the Republican’s endorsement by the former president.

In a prepared statement, Bush, a summer resident of Maine, says he’s gotten to know Summers well and Summers has the experience and background to become an outstanding member of the Senate.

“President Bush is the definition of a true statesman who has selflessly answered repeated calls to serve his country for more than seven decades,” Summers said in a prepared statement responding to the endorsement. “He has long been an inspiration and role model to me, and I will try everyday to emulate his ideals, demeanor and dedication if elected. His endorsement is humbling and my family and I are appreciative of his support.”

Summers, Maine’s secretary of state, faces Democrat Cynthia Dill, and independents Angus King, Steve Woods and Danny Dalton in the Nov. 6 election.
