AUBURN — A Center Street gasoline spill Monday left a lingering smell north of the downtown.

Stephen Flannery of the Maine Department of Environmental protection said crews were working on a pump Monday at the Xpress Stop gas station at 484 Center St. when it leaked up to 60 gallons of gasoline.

The DEP directed the cleanup, he said, which was completed Monday

“They had a discharge and dealt with it quickly,” he said.

Some leaked into a city storm sewer that runs south along Center Street to North River Road, and that was reported Tuesday.

“There were reports of gasoline vapors coming up through a floor drain in the Dunkin’ Donuts,” Flannery said. “It looked like some of it got farther along than we knew.”

That was cleaned up Tuesday, he said.

Flannery said he inspected the storm sewer on Wednesday and found that none of the gasoline had reached the Androscoggin River.
